LISTEN: Boss Battle Release New Song “Dub Kitty”

Austin-based trio Boss Battle released a new song “Dub Kitty,” which is taken from their new album, Attack Time.

“Dub Kitty” begins with a pair of male and female vocals layered over top of a driving, but distorted, guitar lines, bass parts, and drums. The song has a strangely catchy sense of timing and melody, as it brings together harder rock elements with punk and this combination works well to catch and keep a listener’s attention.

As noted above, the trio’s sound blends elements, together, to create something that is uniquely their own. In this case, they have taken sounds that appeared in industrial music from the 1990s and paired them with explosive punk hooks. A press release makes the comparison that Boss Battle’s industrial sound is reminiscent of bands like Pig Face or Ministry, but the Austin trio’s punk sound calls to mind the early work of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

So, with that in mind, what do the four songs on Attack Time sound like?

Well, on these songs, Boss Battle shows an affinity for pop-tinged hooks, while retaining their harder-edge. This edge comes across in the “onslaught of voices” created by Erin Fraizer (keyboards and vocals) and Chico Jones (guitar and vocals), who often sing their parts into a shared microphone, according to a press release. Apart from the vocals, Attack Time features crunchy guitars, along with drummer Benjamin Kent’s precise and powerful sense of rhythm. In and of themselves, the four songs on this release range from driving anthemic songs like “Ride” and the aforementioned “Dub Kitty,” but there is also “Jolt,” a slithering noise-pop song, and “Step,” the closing track on the album that packs a slow and deliberate punch.

Attack Time was recorded at Ohm Recording in Austin, which is owned by Boss Battle’s own Chico Jones. The new album was recorded over a series of sessions within the last year, and it was released on CD and digitally, today, September 11th, 2015.

Lastly, it is important to note that the band hit the road on September 10th, 2015, for a series of concerts with Sky Acre. Take a look at a complete listing of their upcoming September concerts, below.
