Rings of Various Sounds
Vlad Kudryavtsev, aka Monokle, is a Russian producer who also happens to be a psychologist. Russia doesn’t exactly have a reputation for being a famous center for electronic music, so it’s a little bit surprising that he is involved in the genre. However, he joined a German record label three years ago and has been shaping his sound ever since. His voice has been established through his ability to weave ambient and drone sounds together in an effortless manner. On his new release Rings, he has collaborated with various other DJs that are also involved in the Russian electronic music sound. As a whole, this makes for an intriguing listen for old fans of Monokle and new fans alike.
The album opener “Rouse” starts out with a sound difficult to describe accurately. Basically, it begins with one steady beat that repeats again and again until an additional beat joins in the background. Then, this sound takes charge as the track gradually develops a mixture of layered sounds and some voices as well.
As mentioned, Rings features old friends of Monokle who lend their unique sounds, combining them with his. His close friend Milinal lends his vocals to lead single “Calypt.” The vocals themselves are soft and difficult to understand at times as the beat sometimes takes control of the track. This is far from being a bad thing; the beat is mesmerizing and steady and its being the main focus is what makes the track intriguing and complex.
“Backwash” is a track that seems to be more appropriate in the club scene. Not all of the tracks on Rings have that vibe but this one has it from the moment the songs begins. It paints a vivid image of a group of friends joining together and dancing along without a care in the world. The melody in general here is dazzling and dreamy, making it perfect dancing music.
Rings is filled with an eclectic mix of voices and sounds. No two songs on here sound alike, each weaving together unique melodies that manage to leave an impact on listeners. This LP is distinctive and powerful, making Monokle an even more influential DJ in the electronic music world. His influence has expanded beyond Russia and he has made his mark all over the globe.
