At the “End of The Road Festival” held this weekend in the UK, Laura Marling surprised fans with a Foo Fighters track.

Everyone knows Laura Marling as the “underage” English folk singer/songwriter that has abilities beyond her years both musically and especially lyrically. But what many don’t know about her is her love to rock out and for musical genres such as punk rock. With this knowledge, however, a Foo Fighter’s cover by her wouldn’t seem as surprising as it did to fans at the “End of the Road Festival” held in the UK this past weekend. The song she covered was “Tired of You” off of their 2002 album “One by One.” Dave Grohl is no stranger to punk music, having been a part of Washington D.C.’s music scene as the drummer of Scream. So the idea of one punk fan paying homage to another is very tempting to fans of both artists.

The responsibility of doing this song the justice that it deserves was one that Marling couldn’t do alone so she invited former 2013 tour-mate Marika Hackman to help her out. The two teamed up for a very unique performance of the Foos’ song. While the intimacy of the song remains the same in either version, the transition of the song into a folk setting is very impressive. The two artists take the song and sing it in a harmonizing way that Grohl did not have in his original version.

Like almost all covers it can never be said which version is better and rarely do artists set out to gain such a title. The same can be said for this cover and the respect of one artist to another is the only motivation that can be seen.

The Foo Fighters were busy celebrating their UK return at the Milton Keynes Bowl after having to cancel their Glastonbury and Wembly Stadium gigs, due to Grohl’s leg injury on stage back in June. According to NME, The Foos’ played a two-and-a-half hour show with artists such as John Paul Jones and Roger Taylor.

Ryan Fricke: Music is my therapy, which I could not function without. I am currently finishing my senior year a Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida with a Journalism major and a Creative Writing Minor. I first realized I wanted to become a Music Journalist the minute I learned that I could get paid to do the two things I love most, writing and listening to music. I have yet to decide which I am more infatuated with but for the time being I will happily house them to their stalemate. My plans after graduation are unclear but I hope to further gain experience in this profession.
