WATCH: Morrissey Covers Waylon Jennings’ “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way”

British singer Morrissey recently covered “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way,” originally performed by country legend Waylon Jennings.

The song was originally released by Jennings in 1975, according to NME. Morrissey performed “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way” during a show he did in California on August 29. Though he obviously gives a different take on it than Jennings, Morrissey clearly has more of a country twang while performing the track than he ever did with The Smiths or on his own solo music. It’s an interesting and unexpected choice for the veteran indie rocker, but it seems to be one that ultimately paid off as the crowd cheers and begins to clap along to the beat. Watch him sing the cover live below.

Prior to this show, Morrissey was on tour in the United States throughout June and July. Blondie and Amanda Palmer were both scheduled to make special guest appearances during his tour, but Palmer unfortunately had to cancel her gig as the opening act for him when she contracted Lyme disease. During his U.S. touring run, Morrissey also performed as a headliner at Firefly Music Festival in Delaware, along with Snoop Dogg, Kings of Leon, Zedd and more.

More recently, Morrissey has made headlines for a number of things. One of these newsworthy topics is the singer-songwriter claiming that an airport security agent sexually assaulted him in San Francisco during a pre-flight screening. He posted about the experience online, at one point writing, “In the interests of imperishable bureaucracy my submitted complaint against this ‘officer’ will obviously be either unread or ignored because, as we all know, on matters of officialism it is not possible to be pleasantly surprised by anything at all. However, what is clear is that, should you find yourself traveling through San Francisco International Airport, you should expect sexual abuse from the so-called ‘security officers’ who, we are unconvincingly warned, are acting only for our security.”

On a lighter note, it has also been announced that Morrissey will be releasing his debut novel, List of the Lost, on September 24. This is not Morrissey’s first foray into the world of writing books, but it is his first work of fiction. However, the book will only be published in paperback format and will only be available for purchase in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa.
