Hollywood Vampires, the supergroup containing Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper and Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, has released a new cover. This time around, they’ve recorded “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin.
The group has a rotating cast of collaborators who will appear on their self-titled debut, out September 11. Among the big-name collaborators are Paul McCartney, The Eagles’ Joe Walsh, Slash of Guns N Roses and AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, among others. According to NME, all proceeds from the album will be going to MusiCares, a charity that focuses on the financial, medical and personal needs of the music community.
The “Whole Lotta Love” cover by the Hollywood Vampires has a sharp sound, with that same rhythmic guitar strumming and percussion from the original, but with a twist. The supergroup has added a strings section and harmonica to the instrumentals and noticeably slowed the tune down, both instrumentally and vocally. Brian Johnson and Alice Cooper share the responsibility of vocals on this one. It picks up its pace once the first verse is over and it leads into the chorus. It’s a loud song and, though Led Zeppelin is a legendary rock band, the Hollywood Vampires do a great job honoring the track. Listen to their cover of “Whole Lotta Love” below.
The Hollywood Vampires have previously released a cover of “My Generation” by The Who and their forthcoming album will include covers of T.Rex’s “Jeepness” and The Small Faces’ “Itchycoo Park.” The group will be playing a few live shows in mid-September, with two dates at Hollywood’s Roxy Theatre and a third at the Rock in Rio Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
