There’s no guessing that Julia Holter’s newly released singles strike a chord in any baroque pop lovers heart. With a slot on the independent festival Le Guess Who?, and with the release of a brand new song “She Calls Me Home,” the sound and influence reigns on.
“Sea Calls Me Home,” differs from her previous releases, such as her more ambient sounding album Loud City Song, released in 2013. Holter’s melodious single is supported by harpsichords and horns with Broadcast-like vocals and rhythm; carving an ethereal imagery against the commonplace life-event told in the lyrics.
Holter released news on her forthcoming album Have You In My Wilderness in early July, with a September 25th release via Domino, and also announcing her lead single “Feel You.”
“’Sea Calls Me Home’ is about moving away from things that trap you, the scary wonder in discovering freedom,” said Holter on the song. The song is sharp in sound and supports the what Holter’s press release describes as her “most sonically intimate album, with her vocals front and center in the mix, lifted out of the layers of smeared, hazy effects. The result is striking: Clear and vivid, but disarmingly personal.”
