King Midas Sound, the sub-electronic, narco hip-hop side-project plans to release Edition 1 via Ninja Tune on September 18th. Touted to be the first of a four-album concept-series, Edition 1 just might mark the group’s most ambitious outing yet.
While nothing short of an eardrum-rupturing electronic-fusion of sorts, King Midas Sound made it’s eponymous debut in 2009 with Waiting For You on Hyperdub. Since then, the trio: The Bug(whose real name is Kevin Martin), Roger Robinson, and Kiki Hitomi have been busy cooking-up and releasing their own solo-projects. Now in 2015, KMS made their move over to Ninja Tune allowing them the opportunity to embark on their second-record. This second-album will be the first in a series of collaborative projects that will ensue.
Aptly titled: Edition 1, the concept-album is a collaborative-effort with the Austrian guitarist and electronic-producing maestro, Fennesz. Inspired by Fennesz’s unique Endless Summer(2001) album, both Martin and Robinson recruited his talents to mesh with their own. Fennesz’s guitar-tonality and experimental sensibilities juxtapose strangely with KMS’s anxiety-ridden vibes, exuding challenging new music to any listener within the EDM realm. A highlight from Edition 1, “Waves” is the best representation of sonic-genius these performers can pull-together.
Following the release of The Bug’s last album: Angels & Devils, he suggested he would focus his next record on the ideology of sonic-ambience and saturate it with lyrics of absolute emotion. Operating on the distinctive terms of melancholy-expression, Martin enlisted Fennesz to contribute improvisational guitar techniques and an entire anthology of heavily-layered samples and quirks from his own personal archive of previously unreleased-material. Fennesz’s contribution fleshes-out a fully compositional collaborative-work.
Kevin Martin has confirmed the two acts will be taking their collaboration on the road to perform together on stage beginning at Incubate in Tilburg during September.
