Rapper Dr. Dre just announced the August 7 release of his latest album, Compton: A Soundtrack. It’s his first new album since 1999.
The former NWA member has completed a soundtrack for the upcoming film featuring all new music. The soundtrack for Straight Outta Compton will be available on Apple Music a week before the NWA biopic itself hits theaters on August 14. Following Dr. Dre’s appearance on Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city, Lamar appears on two of the tracks on Compton, as does Snoop Dogg. In fact, only the intro and the closer to the album don’t feature collaborations.
The announcement of a new Dre album has brought up plenty of questions about his previously announced record, Detox. Dr. Dre spoke about the formerly-hyped album on his Beats 1 radio show The Pharmacy, according to Fuse.
This is something you’re not gonna hear many artists say: the reason that Detox didn’t come out was because I didn’t like it. It wasn’t good. The record, it just wasn’t good… I mean seriously, I worked my ass off on it, but I didn’t think I did a good enough job. I couldn’t do that to my fans, I couldn’t do that to myself, to be honest.
Ice Cube had already said that this album release was coming up, but it wasn’t confirmed until Dr. Dre announced the new music himself. In July, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube had also hinted at a reunion for NWA with Eminem sitting in as an “honorary member” for the late Eazy-E. As it turns out, Eminem is featured on the “Medicine Man” track from Compton. See the full track list with all of the collaborators below.
