Alice Glass, formerly one half of the duo Crystal Castles, has released a new solo track called “Stillbirth.”
This is the first song that Glass has released as a solo artist. Crystal Castles broke up in October 2014, after 10 years together, as announced via Glass’s Twitter. The band’s breakup did not seem to be amicable, as they had brief online feud, with Ethan Kath claiming that Glass had been credited for songs that he had actually written. According to NME, Glass replied that she had written almost all of the lyrics and vocal melodies throughout Crystal Castles’ run as a band.
“Stillbirth” is a track that does have a somewhat similar sound to the music of Crystal Castles, beginning with the noise-pop aesthetic. Over the loud, electronic music you can hear Glass’s ethereal yet strong vocals. The song does have brief, quieter lulls that separate the in-your-face verses. The lyrics of “Stillbirth” are predictably dark, with lines like “I want to feel like a waste of space” repeated in the chorus. Glass announced that all of the proceeds from purchasing the song digitally will benefit organizations, like the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), that help survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence and incest. In April, Kath released new track called “Frail” with a new vocalist, Edith, under the name Crystal Castles. A few months later, in early July, Crystal Castles released another new track, “Decide,” seemingly cementing Edith as the group’s new vocalist.
