The Indie pop duo from Los Angeles have released a video for their tribute song, “Los Angeles” which is part of their upcoming album Recreational Love, which will be released July 17th, 2015.
The video for “Los Angeles” features Inara running around Los Angeles, scribbling lyrics to the song on anything that she can get her hands on, from balloons to staircases, to simply handing out pieces of folded paper with the lyrics on them to bystanders, to graffiting walls and the Walk of Fame. I thought this was a rather unique take on a music video, you have a group from Los Angeles, who wrote a song about Los Angeles, titled “Los Angeles”, and the video is of the lyrics being spread throughout Los Angeles. The video also has some neat camera and time distortion effects going on, some of which are too hard to put into words. For example, the opening scene is extremely similar to the ending scene.
The song itself is a catchy if slightly intimate ballad or ode to Los Angeles, the first and second verse as well as the bridge all start off intimately (“Touch yourself and get yourself”, “Summer night, take off your clothes”) Though it’s likely that these are referring more to the city itself than to any particular person. That being said, the Chorus is catchy and clever, converting the pronunciation of “LA” from “Ell Ay” to a repeated “La”, further tying the city into the song.
Recreational Love has been a long time coming, the album has been in the works for five years. (Though the release date was announced back in May That being said, the duo has worked hard throughout those five years, and Recreational Love may end up being bigger than their previous album, Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future
The Bird and the Bee are playing a show at Webster Hall in NYC July 17th, the same day Recreational Love is being released. You can buy tickets for that show here
