St. Vincent released a new song with West Chester, Pennsylvania’s color guard team Field of View. The song titled, “Everyone You Know Will Go Away,” was performed as part of Contemporary Color.
Contemporary Color is a collaborative project that puts together color guard routines with live music performances. In addition to St. Vincent other performers included Ira Glass (This American Life), Nelly Furtado, Nico Muhly, Kelis, Zola Jesus, Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes, tUnE-yArDs, How to Dress Well, plus Ad-Rock and Money Mark. The show took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The song stylistically embodies what fans have come to expect from St. Vincent. The intro is quite eerie, as the accompanying color guard performs under dim lights. St. Vincent’s voice echoes the established melody and her vocals add to the overall haunting feeling of the single. “Everyone You Know Will Go Away,” is both dynamic and dramatic, which the color guard mirrors accurately.
St. Vincent recently sat down for an interview with New York Times music critic Jon Pareles. During the interview she reflected on her perception of color guard when she was in high school:
What I know about contemporary color from those days is that they weren’t the football team, they weren’t the cheerleaders, they weren’t the high school band. They were this really bizarre underground subculture of what stemmed from a militaristic dance, but really flowered into its own world. I knew about the color guard because they’d be rehearsing on the lawn and throwing the toy rifles and waving the flags. It was interesting because they’re throwing these things that signify violence, but they’re doing it in a really beautiful way.
