LISTEN: Veruca Salt Release New Song “Empty Bottle”

Veruca Salt sounds like the spoiled little girl from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that fell down the trash chute for being ‘bad egg’, but this Veruca Salt is an actual music group. Veruca Salt’s new album, Ghost Stories, comes out in July of this year. So far, they released some other singles besides the newly released “Empty Bottle”, but the album will feature the original band lineup and includes all new songs.

The original group members that made up Veruca Salt include Louise Post and Nina Gordon, the two frontwomen of the band, their bassist Steve Lack, and drummer Jim Shapiro. Veruca Salt produced three albums between 1994’s American Thighs and 1997’s Eight Arms to Hold You, before they went their separate ways pre-millennium. The group refreshed and reformed following the millennium separation or Nina Gordon, the original frontwomen of the group, kicking off reunion tours this past Monday after performing live on Conan.

It took 18 years in the making to reunite the original frontwomen, Post and Gordon, but their relationship with each other is what made the band so successful. The music video for the song “Empty Bottles” is available on public video sharing platforms like YouTube and the audio version of the song is available on SoundCloud and other public audio sharing platforms.

The song starts out mellow and tranquil, but then the loud screams and fist clenching anger rises up from the cracks in the melody. Intimate lyrics flow with the roller coaster rhythms, and gentle acoustic guitar strumming towards the end brings the exciting track full circle. It represents the problems that the band often faced within themselves. The song represents the nostalgia of what grunge music used to sound like. Although the women in the band that make up the heart and soul of this group had their differences, you can hear it up front what disagreements the band made on songs and music to be released, but also some disagreements the listener would feel when it comes to tough situations.
