“The End Is Near,” according to Dirty Bourbon River Show.
The Nola-based band’s ninth official music video for their song “Animal” is making its world premiere today right here at mxdwn. The song is off their ninth studio album, “Important Things Humans Should Know,” and they want you to know that the Unicorn Ocean has been destroyed and engulfed in flames.
Allow us to explain: the video begins with a 2D animation, hand drawn by Dirty Bourbon River Show’s vocalist Noah Adams, that shows a stage dubbed the “Unicorn Ocean” with a band playing on it. A shaded figure then climbs to the top, lets the banner fall on top of the band and sets the stage aflame. The video then shows the above screenshot of the sign, which transitions it into real time. The rest is different shots of the band, all in black and white, singing, dancing and playing along to the song.
Adams is shown playing a guitar with an attached shotgun, which he built himself. According to a press release, it is fully functional, took a year to make and is the only known one in the world. In the release, Adams commented on the video itself:
‘What exactly is happening in this video?’ a lot of people will probably ask me. Hmmm. You know, I’m not really sure. I dont think we should overthink music like this too much…
Whatever’s happening, we like it. The grittiness of both the horns and Adams’ voice on the track are indeed, as the title suggests, animalistic, but also a great set-up for the strange, primal lyrical and visual components of Adams appearances; shirtless, sporting an impressive beard and imitating monkey sounds. “I want to be an animal,” he sings, and we believe him.
