We thought 2012 was the last we’d hear of Australian rock band INXS or any of its members, until today.
The band’s original lead singer, Michael Hutchence, tragically took his life in 1997. Now, almost eight years after his death, his final solo song, “Friction,” is available in full and is being released through t-shirt line.
Why? How? What? Basically, fashion designer Astrella – the daughter of Scottish musician Donovan, who is headlining this year’s Glastonbury Festival – is the founder of PledgeMusic, “direct-to-fan music platform, which brings artists and fans together to share in the experience of music as it happens.” One of the components of this interaction for this particular project is allowing fans to participate in a t-shirt design contest, which will determine which shirt will be sent out to fans along with Hutchence’s single – a subsection of PledgeMusic and Astrella’s work known as MUSICAL T’s.
“Friction” was recorded in 1995 with the producers of Hutchence’s then-in-progress solo album, Danny Saber and Andy Gill. Hutchence’s website did release a sample of “Friction” in 2011, which has since been deleted. So, MUSICAL T’s release is a way for fans to get the full song and hear the artist’s first solo release in 15 years.
The t-shirt-song package is now available for preorder on the PledgeMusic website; sales officially begin on September 1. You can stream “Friction” on Astrella’s website and vote for t-shirt design here.
