In the last 30 years, hip-hop group Geto Boys have released 8 albums, sold many records, been banned from cities, and have received no substantial radio play. But, they have still managed to cultivate a dedicated fanbase.
Despite an appearance on the Grand Theft Auto V Soundtrack, fans of the Geto Boys have been clamoring for another album of new material. Finally, after nine year wait, their wish is within sight as a Kickstarter campaign has been set up to fund their upcoming album, Habeas Corpus.
Their campaign goal is to raise $100,000, which will provide the means necessary to record this album that could potentially address contemporary current events and issues like “terrorism to the economic downturn, to the slew of police shootings, and brutality incidents,” which the Geto Boys – like the rest of the world – have followed in the media. But, the artists are intending “not to fan the flames and divide, but to put out the fire, and unite.” However, they also made it clear that they won’t be “kissing no ass to be accepted,” with their new music.
What is their plan?
Well, the group is anticipating that their campaign will be successfully funded by mid-July, which will enable them to book studio time in Houston and begin recording the Habeas Corpus album in August or September of 2015.
What can fans expect from Habeas Corpus?
According to the Geto Boys’ Kickstarter, they will be producing the album “in full attack mode – leaving no stone unturned.” And, they plan to work with new and veteran producers to achieve and give their fans “that Geto Boys uncut, raw feel that you love, while simultaneously developing a unique sound that takes our music to the next level.”
Additionally, the group has plans to feature a select number of skilled well-known musical artists that they respect. And, lastly, the Geto Boys believe that they “owe it to our fans to make a Geto Boys album, not a compilation.”
At the end of the day, the group wants their fans to have a voice in the making of Habeas Corpus, because the album’s funds will not be able to be raised without fan support, as the Geto Boys are not signed to a major label.
