Connecticut-bred Merrill Garbus created her musical project under the name of tUnE-yArDs, and later moved to Oakland after the release of her first album. The quirky vocalist included the ukulele and percussion in her first album, and then joined forces with Oakland-based Nate Brenner, who provides the act’s electric bass.
The duo’s experimental sound matches Garbus’ eccentricity and traverses through all realms of experimental pop, R&B, afrobeat, and even the more avant-garde freak folk genre that utilizes uncommon sounds within the musical melodies. tUnE-yArDs’ credence in the mainstream musical industry really took off after their second album, Whokill’s, release in 2011, which was referenced in numerous tv shows.
San Francisco’s Stern Grove Music Festival, currently in its 78th Season, is put on by the non-profit Stern Grove Festival Association devoted to providing free arts to those in the Bay Area. It has taken place in SF’s outdoor amphitheater, Sigmund Stern Grove, since 1938 and will be held until mid-August for this 2015 session. Be sure to take part in this concert, not only because its free, but because its a little piece of San Francisco’s rich musical history!
