Good Old War @ The Independent 7/27

In referencing the band’s leaders Keith Goodwin, Dan Schwartz and former member Tim Arnold, Philadelphia based band Good Old War’s name came from a combination of the three, splicing the initial half of Goodwin’s name with the latter half of Arnold and concluding with the translation of Schwartz’s name to war. Beginning in 2008, the trio released their first album Ear Candy for the Headphone Trippers, but it was their second, self-titled album, which gained them a bit more accolade, making its way into the Billboard 200 charts at number 150.

The band officially lost Arnold in 2014 to the prospect of raising a family, reducing their status as a trio to a duo. Good Old War did not let that stop them, however, releasing their first single “Tell Me What You Want From Me” from the new album Broken Into Better Shape which will already be their fourth full-length album release projected to come out on June 30, 2015.

Good Old War is  often referenced within the genre of indie folk, but as a signed band, this is a blatant misconception. There is this contemporary issue of predecessing a certain musical genre with the term indie even when the act is not independently producing and releasing their work. Instead, referencing Good Old War’s sound as indie folk parallels their music to the alternative and non-conventional sound that independent artists majorly employ.
