Melvins’ Buzz Osborne Says New Kurt Cobain Documentary Is Untrue

When the new Kurt Cobain documentary, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck , was officially released in May, it was quickly acclaimed by all who watched. After receiving such approval, it was a bit of a surprise that the documentary had a “hater,” to say the least. The Melvins’ founder, Buzz Osborne, was not thrilled with the facts presented in the film. As an old friend of Cobain, he has explicitly expressed his opinion, and it could not be more clear that his mind will not and cannot be changed.

According to Osborne, the stories told in the documentary were completely inaccurate, and he doesn’t hesitate to mention the long-time friendship the two shared to back up his credibility.

I went to high school with Kurt and was a big part of all the Nirvana guys’ lives before and after they became famous. I thought very highly of Kurt, Krist and Dave. We were good friends when they were all flat broke, long before they could buy big houses and cars with credit cards. My band played with Nirvana at their last show. I was there for the beginning and I was there for the end, for the very good and the very bad.

Osborne doesn’t hold back in his review for The Talkhouse. Getting right to-the-point, he says, “First off, people need to understand that 90% of Montage of Heck is bullshit. Total bullshit. That’s the one thing no one gets about Cobain — he was a master of jerking your chain.” He is deeply angered over the fact that people will believe anything they hear about Cobain, especially if it is coming from the mouth of Courtney Love. Osborne’s rant is given good reason. Although he is passionate enough about the topic to be so dissatisfied, he states that his honesty is pointless, because people are going to continue to believe whatever serves entertainment. “If people want to believe it and think he was capable of doing all those things, that’s their problem,” Osborne says of the fabricated deceptions in the film. “But, I am not going along with it.” Ending on a slightly sarcastic note, Osborne applauds the film, with statement:

I did enjoy the really cool animation, though, and they did a fantastic job of showing what a depressing shit-hole Aberdeen really was and still is. For that, I salute them!
