Father John Misty released the video for title track “I Love You, Honeybear” yesterday after the acclaimed album of the same name, released back in February.
If you ever wanted to know how irrational it is for two drunk and high EMTs to mess around in the back of an ambulance while on call, this is the video for you. Other than the obvious what-not-to-do undertone, the video showcases two couples’ worlds colliding in an unfortunate circumstance.
The story starts off with the two EMTs drinking whiskey straight from the bottle, laughing and messing around with medical equipment in the back of their ambulance. Even if it is reckless of them to act this way, there’s also this nagging in the back of your mind while watching, the unsatisfactory feeling you get when you think about how you’d handle the stress of being an EMT and what they go through daily.
The EMT couple get a call about halfway through the video, arriving on the scene and immediately sobering to the situation at hand: a young couple exposed to some sort of gas leak while sleeping in their grandiose four poster bed. I won’t give away the ending, but by the end you’ll have felt…alot.
Transitioning from a dreamlike atmosphere the young couple represent to the grittiness of the real world, the two paramedics go back to their normal lives in the last scene, leaving the viewer a bit lost. While the story of the young couple is a bit morbid and beautiful, the story of the paramedic couple brings you back to reality. It’s a bit of a juxtaposition between the fantasy of love and the reality of it.
Joshua Tillman, better known as Father John Misty, co-directed and co-stared in the video. Tillman was formerly in the band Fleet Foxes but has now made quite a name for himself under his new moniker, touring and releasing two albums in the past three years.
According to Tillman, the video is, “a portrayal of an average night in the lives of two EMTs.”
