In her newest video for the single, “Ghost,” Halsey channels the colorful vibe of Tokyo, a la Lost In Translation. In this new video, Halsey has elected to ditch the male co-stars that have frequently been seen in her videos for a more female romantic interest.
Halsey has thus far made a reputation as one of the more provocative pop stars in the business today. The twenty-year-old pop sensation has taken her blueish-tinted hair to the color-saturated city of Tokyo, where she has made a new companion. Different from the male companions that have been featured in her previous videos, the video for “Ghost” finds Halsey engaged in an apparent romantic relationship with a young Tokyo local. While not overtly charged with sexual imagery, there’s a pretty strong implication that these two women are either very close friends or in a pretty heavy relationship with each other. The ambiguity of the relationship was done intentionally so by Halsey, allowing the viewer to come up with their own interpretation of the relationship. Are these two women just friends? Have they been in a relationship for some time? Are they merely two people who found each other in a massive city and they have no intention of staying with each other? Whatever the exact answer, Halsey herself seems to be searching for something in this video. There are frequent cuts to Halsey gazing longingly outside her hotel window onto the bright Tokyo lights, looking either for something or someone. IF this video is an extension of some sort of inner conflict that the pop singer’s currently experiencing, we hope she finds it soon.
Halsey is currently working on her first full-length studio recording. The record, called Badlands, will be available in August of this year. She’ll also be undergoing a series of concerts and tours in support of the record.
