Memory Tapes @ The Independent 7/15

Under the initial experimental aliases of Memory Cassette and Weird Tapes, New Jersey bred Dayve Hawk, finally settled on the pseudonym Memory Tapes, under which he released his first LP “Seek Magic” in 2009. He originally was a part of the rock band “Hall Social,” but began remixing music on his own accord after the band’s disbanding in 2007.

With the production skills Hawk garnered during his period of heavy remixing along with the long-lasting influence of his earlier rocker days with Hall Social, Memory Tapes has successfully superimposed his previous experiences into his current musical personality, or shall I say his past memories into his current “memory tapes.” Cheesiness aside, Memory Tapes’ discography indicates who he once was, while also guiding us towards where he is going–the progressive dreamwave movement of the contemporary that is only increasing in its anthology of artists.

A couple months ago, Memory Tapes released a two-song single “Fallout / House on Fire,” with a groovy dance vibe from the first and a complementary, more mellow tone to the second; to use labels, “Fallout” gravitated towards dream pop, while “House on Fire” could be seen as more representative of chillwave. This release, the first since his third LP “Grace / Confusion” in 2012, spurred his summer tour during which he will be gracing San Francisco with his presence this July.
