GoldLink @ The New Parish 6/18

Looking to get down to some funky beats and uptempo electro rap? If not, then DMV (not the purgatory you may be imagining, but the region of DC-Maryland-Virginia) rapper GoldLink may not be for you. But, if you, like me, are looking for some progressive hip hop to groove to, you should definitely check out GoldLink at Oakland’s New Parish this month with openers Falcons and Mikos Da Gawd.

With less than 30 songs on his SoundCloud, GoldLink has already accrued epidemic popularity to his name, recently listed in XXL’s “Freshman Class” of 2015’s up and coming rappers. He has already collaborated with artists like ZHU, Bipolar Sunshine, and Kaytranada in his relatively newborn career.

His debut project, “The God Complex” presents a unique sound that makes it difficult to define his musical aesthetic. Utilizing a mix of minimalistic house synths with an R&B energy to support his street rhymes, GoldLink’s categorization as a rapper would be far too limiting. Instead, he manages to create a normally unsuitable harmony between electronic beats and hip hop–a novel genre coined by some as “future bounce.” Be sure to stay tuned to see how GoldLink continues to evolve and leave his influential impression on hip hop, and definitely catch him in Oakland while he still remains somewhat of a hidden gem in the mainstream.
