It’s love and indie rock when it comes to a dynamic pair called, The Weepies. The Los Angeles natives released a new video for “Fancy Things” from their latest full-length studio project, Sirens. The folk duo released their first new album in five years, Sirens in April 2015. In spite of life’s many adversaries and Deb Talan’s breast cancer diagnosis, the married couple found relentless amount of inspiration, motivation and gives the world a mountain of imagination. Their approach to “Fancy Things” is not as lighthearted but has more of a folk-blues edge sound in comparison to their third album Hideaway released in April 2008 leading to the present.
The Weepies use their theatrical signature approach of letting actors and fans tell their story in video. At the start of the video, an older gentleman stands on the side of a very busy street staring in disarray or in deep thought. Right before the song begins the older gentleman closes his eyes and starts to do a very somber freestyle dance with out any lively facial expressions. It’s as if he hears Deb Talan advice as she sings “You will meet him on a train, you will meet him on a plane, you will meet him on the way to somewhere you have never been, you got to get on board, you got to spread your wings, you got to take a chance if you want romance and fancy things.” The verse is very descriptive for the many expressive things that are captured while watching the video. The video progresses by showing different individuals with different nationalities and ages with very dark and blank expressions standing still and breaking into their own random dances as if they are releasing a lost emotion inside. In the middle of the short video, there is a couple in romance and a guy dancing lively and smiling midst of a party. The director takes the ending of the video back to the beginning scene with the older gentleman and you can’t help but to snicker because he is gettin’ it.
In an interview with Paste Magazine, Steve Tannen said,
“Sometimes we try to write in other people’s styles. For this we were trying to write like Cole Porter with his ‘pop wisdom’ sayings: things that sound wise or poetic but might not actually mean anything. ‘You will meet him on a train,’ or ‘You’ve got to take a chance if you want romance.’ We tried to do a Cole Porter song, and we might not have quite gotten there, but even falling short of Cole Porter can get you somewhere.”
In support of their debut album Sirens,Tannen and Deb Talan will commence a North America tour with their incredibly talented full band. The Weepies tour will begin on Friday, May 29th in Madison, Wisconsin at The Majestic Theatre and end on Wednesday, July 1st in Iowa City, Iowa at Englert Theatre.
