Scottish producer Hudson Mohawke is gearing up to release his sophomore album, Lantern, next month. However, ahead of the release, Mohawke treated his fans by dropping a music video for a new song, “Scud Books,” on May 21st, 2015.
The music video for “Scud Books” opens with an outdoor shot at night of Mohawke’s name lit up in white neon lights. After a quick jump cut that shows a blooming blood orange orchid, viewers are transported to a live shot from a concert that he gave at the Boiler Room, according to The Fader. The remainder of the video continues to intercut live shots taken from the Boiler Room with footage of orchids, which are bathed in different colored lights as they bloom. Looking closely, viewers will also notice that Mohawke’s name is present in all of the footage.
In creating a video with such consistent yet colorful visuals, Mohawke gives the viewers the opportunity to focus on the catchy electronic track that underpins the video. Alternatively, this video technique allows viewers the opportunity to let their minds wander and perhaps create their own unique interpretation of the possible connections between the blooming orchids and the live performance.

On the “Hudson Mohawke Album Special,” which premiered on BBC Radio 1 on the 21st of May, listeners that tuned into the program were treated to a special preview of several new songs that will be on Lantern. The Fader reports that the new songs were the album’s title track, “Kettles,” “Scud Books,” and “Indian Steps,” which features English-born and California-raised visual artist and musician Antony of the band Antony and the Johnsons.
