The Cure’s Robert Smith has covered “There’s a Girl in the Corner,” a single from The Twilight Sad’s recent album Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave.
Members of The Twilight Sad are fans of The Cure and hoped that Smith would be able to collaborate with them on an album of remixes from their third album, No One Can Ever Know, but that didn’t work out. Guitarist Andy MacFarlane said the band had the idea to ask Smith to cover a track as a double A-side with their new single “It Never Was the Same.”
“After we recorded Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave I sent it to Robert to have a listen, and he said it was ‘BEAUTIFUL’…I knew it was a pretty far fetched idea but thought I might as well chance my arm and ask Robert if he’d be up for covering one of our songs to feature as a double A-side. I couldn’t believe it when he replied saying he’d like to cover ‘There’s a Girl in the Corner,'” said MacFarlane.
Smith finished the cover in March and sent it to the band, who said that they listened to it over and over again while on tour. Smith’s cover is a mid-tempo track with a sound that is distinctly like music from The Cure. The melancholy lyrics and Smith’s vocals create an air of hopelessness, but the song is still enjoyable to listen to and even catchy. You can stream the cover below, and the limited edition 7″ version will be available beginning June 15 on FatCat Records.
Smith has collaborated in the past as well, including with 65daysofstatic on an album in 2011. As for The Cure, Smith spoke with mixed feelings about making new albums in 2014, saying “I’m at an age where I’m enjoying what I’m doing. I don’t feel such a strong urge to beat people over the head with new stuff.”
