Run the Jewels just released a new animated music video for “Early,” a track from their 2014 album Run the Jewels 2.
Joining Killer Mike and El-P on the song is rapper/singer/producer Boots. “Early” is a timely track that begins with an encounter with the police from Killer Mike’s point of view, with mentions of the stop and frisk policy and moving on to him being arrested in front of his wife and son. The video continues with El-P’s perspective, as he watches the altercation take place on his television and expresses how powerless he feels. Run the Jewels last released music video in March, when “Close Your Eyes (And Count To Fuck),” featuring Zack de la Rocha, came out. The video for “Early” is quite different from that one, based on both the track’s subject matter and the animation. According to The Fader, this music video was done by Bug & Sluzzy, and it features a mostly black, white and gray color palette, with blood-red lyrics and accents standing out against the neutral background. Watch it below.
Run the Jewels will be making the rounds at a lot of big festivals in 2015, including FYF Fest in Los Angeles, 80/35 Festival in Des Moines, Firefly Music Festival in Dover and Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. They already performed at Coachella in April, along with Z-Trip, Travis Barker and Gangsta Boo. The duo also performed at SXSW 2015 in Austin, where they were attacked onstage during their performance. Fortunately, neither Killer Mike nor El-P was harmed during the altercation, and the attacker had minimal injuries.
