LISTEN: Sharon Van Etten Releases New Version Of Karen Dalton Song “Remembering Mountains”

Amongst the greats of the 1960s folk blues genre stands the late Karen Dalton. Following her death, Delmore Recording Society released three records—Cotton Eyed Joe, Green Rocky Road, 1966—containing live and unreleased recordings from the folk songstress. Now, New York-based label Tompkins Square Records is preparing for the release of another collection of original material from Dalton.

On May 26th, the label plans on unveiling Remembering Mountains: Unheard Songs By Karen Dalton, which features unused lyrics written by Dalton, Spin reports. The songs are taken from Dalton’s self-published book Song, Poems & Writings, and have finally been given voice through Laren Halo, Lucinda Williams, Julia Holter, Marissa Nadler and Sharon Van Etten.

The first track to be released is the album’s title track “Remembering Mountains,” performed by Van Etten. The track’s piano ballad provides a melancholy platform that enhances Van Etten’s longing vocals. The lyrics depict Dalton’s reflection upon the changing times, treasured relationships and memories from her past. In her uncertainty, however, we find a glimpse of hope for what the future holds.
