Courtney Barnett released new video for her single “Dead Fox.” The single is off Barnett’s debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, out now via Mom + Pop.
At first glance, the video for “Dead Fox” does not seem serious as it is animated and features a variety of animals. However as the song goes on and Barnett repeats the chorus “If you can’t see me, I can’t see you,” the animation takes a graphic turn that packs a very political statement behind it.
According to Stereogum, the video was directed and animated by Rory Kerr and Paul Ruttledge. The duo explained that they drew inspiration from Barnett’s lyrics and the intended message behind the single “Dead Fox.” In a statement to Pitchfork, the animators said the following about “Dead Fox,”:
“We liked how politically loaded and conversational the lyrics are. We wanted the animation to have a stylistic and organic look, hence most of the drawings were done on paper rather than digitally. To further compliment the lyrics, we thought it would be funny to have the animals in the video look as cynical as possible, as if they’d had enough with how humans are treating them.”
Also, according to The Guardian, Barnett’s camp commented saying, “ [Dead Fox is] a powerful argument against the destructive powers of big business, raging against the death and destruction caused by corporations, simply to ‘bring us the best price.”
