Ryn Weaver has made her presence known over the course of the last year. She released her first single, “Octahate,” last year, and has spent the time since developing her sound and preparing for the release of her debut record. To supplement the announcement of her new record, Weaver has produced a new video for the title track off of her upcoming record, “The Fool.”
Ryn Weaver, over the course of the last year, has inserted herself into the pop fabric with a huge, trumpeting sound. Her first single, “Octahate,” took the musical world by storm, and now she’s about to unleash her debut record, The Fool very soon. Now, Weaver has unveiled a new music video for the title track off the new record, “The Fool.” Inspired by Studio Ghibli, the legendary Japanese animation studio that produced such instant classics as Princess Mononoke and The Wind Rises, the video is a window into the complexities of modern relationships, and the power dynamics that can shift between the two people in the relationship.
Taking place in a relaxing meadow, the video opens up with Weaver in a gorgeous white dress waking up next to a brown rabbit. Suddenly, we’re introduced to a man, who’s apparently her boyfriend. The relationship between Weaver and the man seems to be in good spirits as the two dance and frolic together through the meadow when suddenly Weaver’s enveloped by a red scarf and transforms into someone else, as evidenced by her wardrobe transformation. The man runs away far off into the meadow and, aside from a couple of flashback moments, we never see him again. This suggests that Weaver has undergone some sort of new metamorphosis and the change has scared the man away from her. At some point during the video, we also see her trapped in the woods, the red scarf seeming to keep her from escaping.
In a recent interview with The FADER, Weaver revealed that the visual of “The Fool” was meant to convey “the shifting dynamic within relationships in a surrealist, psychedelic medium,” hence the inspiration from Studio Ghibli, which often utilizes surreal imagery to convey a larger notion. The visual spectacle of the video flows quite nicely with the music of “The Fool,” which is at once powerful, alluring, and stunning.
Ryn Weaver will be undergoing a minor tour in support of the record. One of the planned dates includes a performance at TLA this July. Her debut record, The Fool, will be released later this Summer.
