Ben E. King Has Died

Soul singer Ben E. King died on Thursday, April 30, due to natural causes at the age of 76.

King was best known for his 1961 song “Stand By Me,” though he began his career in show business in the late 1950s as a member of The Drifters. The group’s hits include “This Magic Moment” and “There Goes My Baby.” He belongs to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Drifters as well. King’s other solo hits include “Spanish Harlem” and “Supernatural Thing,” though “Stand By Me” had lasting success due in part to a resurgence in the 1980s when a movie of the same name was released.

The BBC and several other outlets announced King’s death on Friday after Phil Brown, King’s publicist, made a statement that the legendary singer died the day before.
