Chelsea Wolfe Announces New Album Abyss And Releases New Song “Iron Moon”

Cleasea Wolfe is known for her ethereal, creepy soundscapes, and her latest release lives up to this expectation.

The singer-songwriter has announced a new album, Abyss, due out August 7 from Sargent House. In addition, she released her first official single from the work, “Iron Moon,” today.

“Iron Moon” is a gorgeously tortured track, featuring angelic vocals from Wolfe over a metal dirge. The verses of the song have an innocent quality about them, while the chorus erupts into an aching howl. Wolfe says she suffers from sleep paralysis, and you can hear this influence on the song. “Iron Moon” has a dreamlike quality that is both objectively beautiful, yet mysterious and haunting. It combines the artful folk music of sleep with the drone metal of someone left paralyzed in her own bed.

The song premiere is the perfect way to kick off her much-anticipated album this summer. Listen to the latest track right here.

Her new album Abyss is the singer’s fifth studio release. She released her first album The Grime and the Glow in 2010, and has received plenty of praise from fans and critics alike since.

Wolfe describes her newest creation as the “hazy afterlife… an inverted thunderstorm… the dark backward… the abyss of time.”

She says:

“Abyss is meant to have the feeling of when you’re dreaming, and you briefly wake up, but then fall back asleep into the same dream, diving quickly into your own subconscious.”

Wolfe collaborated with Ben Chisholm on the album, along with drummer Dylan Fujioka, Ezra Buchla on viola and Mike Sullivan from Russian Circles on guitar. Abyss was produced by John Congleton, who also produced material from St. Vincent.

When we last caught up with Chelsea Wolfe, she had just released her latest album Pain Is Beauty in 2013. Take a look at her video for “The Waves Have Come” right here. The singer-songwriter also released NSFW video alongside the album called “Feral Love,” which you can check out here.

After going on tour last summer with The Eels, Wolfe appears to have focused most of her time and energy in 2015 on her newest record. Stay tuned here as she releases more singles from the release.
