Father John Misty Joined Florence + The Machine For Their Coachella 2015 Performance

Fans and festival attendees who gathered around the stage to see the U.K. rock band Florence + The Machine were not let down at Coachella’s second weekend of musical-glory in the desert. Last week Florence Welch took nasty injury after she broke her foot. PitchFork reported on Monday, April 20, 2015, that Welch had to perform her entire set sitting in a chair, but made it up to her fans by bringing Father John Misty out as a guest in the midst of the somewhat acoustic set.

Joshua Tillman is known for being a former member of Fleet Foxes and Saxon Shores. Known for his experimental rock collaborations, Father John Misty was featured on rap artist Kid Cudi’s 2013 album Indicud. Father John Misty recently performed sold out show at the Glass House in Pomona, CA and covered “Heart Shaped Box” from Nirvana’s 1993 album In Utero.

Leading into the acoustic set with Joshua Tillman, the English rock stars performed songs off their second studio album Ceremonials. Shortly after performing “Only If For a Night,” Welch made sure to explain to the crowd why she couldn’t stand, and how she had a special guest in their midst right before introducing the popular indie rock star, Father John Misty.

As Joshua Tillman took his seat and prepared to play, he jokingly asked, “What have you gotten me into?” The two singers performed a beautifully melodic acoustic version of the 1960’s hit by The Everly Brothers, “Love Hurts.” The song started off with Father John Misty playing the guitar for four bars as Florence Welch swayed on her cue. The singer-songwriter Florence Welch began to serenade the audience with her angelic resonant-style wavering vocals. The crowd went wild when Father John Misty began to sing. Welch joined him using a very soft vocal approach to sing a portion of the verse, “I’ve really learned a lot, really learned a lot, love is like a stove, burns you when it’s hot, love hurts.” The guitar continues to set the moving emotions of the song’s delivery and builds to the bridge where the two sing in a dynamic harmony. As the two repeated, “love hurts” in the chorus, Welch brought the song up an octave and ended it strong as Joshua Tillman sang in a tenor register while the song balanced out.

On June 1, 2015 in the U.K. and June 2, 2015 in the U.S., Florence + The Machine are expecting to release their studio album How Big How Blue How Beautiful to the world.
