The Tacoma, WA legends and world renowned rock stars The Sonics put on a mega show in Settle’s Moore Theatre featuring Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic. It must’ve been all too familiar as The Sonics stepped forward into time to give their generations of fans some authentic raucous worthy sounds at the famous theatre. If you were able to witness the performance live or saw footage, you knew immediately, it was a greatly iconic time in rock n’ roll history. The pacific northwest hit band Nirvana came along in the early 1990s and was known for their pedal-stomping hits like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “About A Girl.” After Nirvana came to an end, Novoselic was part of three experimental bands called Eyesadrift, Flipper and Sweet 75. Each band released at least one studio album and created a major buzz. At the end of March 2015, The Sonics dropped their highly anticipated studio album, This is The Sonics, after 50 years away from the world. The surprise came when bassist Krist Novoselic graced the stage to accompany The Sonics on a few selections which included “Cinderela” and “He’s Waitin'” from their 1966 album, Boom.
According to Consequence Of Sound, Novoselic may be making comeback based on recent rumors of him collaborating with Corin Tucker’s new project super-Earth, collaborations with Peter Buck and recording with Modest Mouse on a forthcoming project. In September 2013, Novoselic revealed in a Spotify interview he had been really heavy on the bass riffs while jamming out on a Modest Mouse album.
While listening to Nirvana’s music, you can hear the influences made by The Sonics and even The Beatles. Their sound is legendary even into the present because it became timeless, and their unequivocal grassroots musical approach to take on the commercial industry. In an interview with the late-great lead vocalist of the grunge band Nirvana, Kurt Cobain mentioned he loved and favored the sounds of drums. He also said that, even though the recordings sounded very cheap, the band captured an “amazing drum sound” by just using one mic over the drums. The Sonics and Krist Novoselic are setting a pretty awesome example on what it means to bridge the generational gap. In the video, you can see the energy in the building was so high. Everyone in the building was on their feet as they were head nodding, especially the guy bouncing in the hat directly in front of the stage. The hometown crowd was deep in numbers and the cameras were out with flashes as the sound of the band created a historical moment in time.
