WATCH: Dan Deacon Releases New Video For “When I Was Done Dying”

The year 2015 has marked a busy year for Baltimore-native Dan Deacon, who just released his latest album Glass Riffer, Deacon’s first in three years. The album features a seamless blend of catchy pop and experimental electronic sounds—the perfect backdrop for a trippy animated film.

Deacon’s latest video for the track “When I Was Done Dying” showcases a colorfully psychedelic array of visual images. With help from animators Chad VanGaalen, Jake Fried, KOKOFREAKBEAN, Anthony Francisco Schepperd, Caleb Wood, Taras Hrabowsky, Dimitri Stankowicz, Colin White and Masanobu, Deacon creates an endless optical illusion. Throughout the video, energetic characters, shapes and settings captivatingly transform across the screen. At times the video aligns with the lyrics: a boy grows roots from his head and alters into a seed, a shark swallows the screen, the boy’s shirt is torn from his body. As the video comes to an end, the animations rapidly reverse until the very start, concluding with a simple blue dot and the center of the screen.
