British band Blur released a new song today titled “Lonesome Street”. The song is the third single released off of the bands upcoming album The Magic Whip, which is set to release on April 28th.
The feel good nature of the instrumentation is balanced out by the somewhat melancholy lyrics sung by the groups’ lead singer Damon Albarn. The song is about facing reality and the struggles of the world, and that sometimes you have to get out and deal with the burden of feeling like it’s you against the world. But do not fret, because if you are in need of someone to hold you in their arms and tell you that everything will be alright look no further than Damon Albarn himself. “Lonesome Street” has an extremely catchy whistling riff that will play in your head moments after the song is over. The whistle is just one of the elements in this uptempo song that easily gets stuck between your ears after the first listen.
Blur is gearing up for the release of The Magic Whip, and in this time has released two other songs to build anticipation for the new album. “Go Out” and “There Are Too Many Of Us” were the other offerings given up by Blur. This is the first album the group will have released since 1999, or sixteen years if you do the math. Blur is returning to the spotlight with all the original members still in place. The members of the group have established other lives that include being a lawyer, farmer, and award winning solo musicians.
The group plans on touring after the release of the album, and most likely will be one of the acts at band member Alex James’s “The Big Festival” this year. Most interesting is the fact that after a jam session in Hong Kong, a sixteen year hiatus was put into question and effectively lifted. Blur might be the greatest thing to happen to London musically post Beatles era. Blur is the only group to have performed at Hyde Park four times, and will be doing so fifth time this year. Until then, Blur now has the task of delivering music that their loyal fans will enjoy, but also trying to capture the ears of the new generation that grew up with only hearing a mention of the name “Blur”, and questions as to why such an all-time great group disbanded. After all, Blur was responsible for creating five #1 albums.Yet, the music Blur is currently releasing shows that their musical prowess can span and fill this generational gap with ease, and bring the band the prominent success and clout they once had.
