Nile Rodgers released the first single, “I’ll Be There”, to Chic’s upcoming album, It’s About Time. This is the first album from Chic in 23 years.
“I’ll be There” is a collaboration with the Martinez Brothers. The video stars super model Karlie Kloss and was directed by Inez and Vinoodh.
Nile Rodgers, the last remaining original member of Chic, went to his site to explain the songs origin and how it originated after working on a track for Sister Sledge.
“The outtake became a new song called, “I’ll Be There,” so named because when I discovered my band’s co-founder Bernard Edwards’ body a few hours after he’d passed away, I said, “Now, I can be there for you in death, the way you were there for me in life.”
Rodgers debuted the video on Facebook,
“#IllBeThere is moving concept for me about decisions we make in life. We’ve tried to capture all the nuances in the full length video and still keep it fun. Karlie Kloss connects the past and present. She sees the original group (who plays this track) on Soul Train. She, visualizes the past looking at old school vinyl – then gets dressed and goes out to a current party to meet up with Stephen Galloway and the current #CHIC lineup happens to be playing live. I’m very thankful to be debuting it exclusively w Music on Facebook to the world. Here it is. I hope you like it.”
The video also gives a nice nod to Daft Punk, as Random Access Memories is among the albums in the pile that Kloss is laying next to. Rodger’s previously collaborated with Daft Punk on their 2013 album, one of which was on the smash hit in 2013, “Get Lucky”. Previously, Rodgers had announced that robot duo is making a short film in honor of Chic’s upcoming album.
It’s About Time originated when Rodgers received a box of unfinished music back in 2010. After hearing the vocals of some of the late members such as Bernard Edwards and Luther Vandross on some of these unreleased tracks, Rodgers then made it a goal to create this album.
