WATCH: Bjork Releases New Video For “Lionsong”

Bjork is one of the few artists out there that has a unique style, both visually and musically, all her own. The only one that readily comes to mind as a close comparison would be Lady Gaga. In her latest video for “Lionsong,” Bjork adopts costumes that are otherworldly, dances around like a bizarre creature that is also out of this world, and literally shows her beating heart encased in a web of darkness.

Bjork is at it again, readers, and this is not meant as a derogatory remark. The latest video from Bjork for the single “Lionsong” is at once difficult and mesmerizing to watch. Difficult because it’s difficult to interpret what Bjork may be trying to represent in this video, mesmerizing because Bjork’s aforementioned singular visual style makes it impossible to look away from the video. The character that Bjork plays in the video seems to be trapped in some otherworldly dimension, and her heart is apparently the biggest captive. The first minute or so of the video shows Bjork’s heart beating against a sort of cage of darkness. We then are taken to the actual image of Bjork herself, encased in a skin-tight body suit, complete with pointy ends that give off an almost peacock-esque vibe. It seems as though the character is one that is in a state of metamorphosis, struggling to free herself from whatever cocoon she’s been encased in. It’s unclear whether the metamorphosis will turn Bjork’s character into some sort of galactic butterfly, or if she’s locked in a permanent state of evolution that will not come to any sort of fruition.

Bizarre though it may be, the video for “Lionsong” is an achievement of a fine artistic caliber. Visually spectacular and musically intriguing, Bjork seems to be on a path of evolution of her own, and we can’t wait to see the results.

Bjork’s latest album, Vulnicura, is available for download on select sites. She recently pulled the record off Spotify after series of leaks threatened to delay the official release even longer. Vulnicura is set for wide release sometime this month. Bjork is currently underway with a Spring 2015 tour to promote the record, although she’s currently only engaged in a small handful of shows.

Doug Farrell: Am I a hip old lady that can hip-hop, be-bop, dance 'til you drop, and yo-yo make a wicked hot cup of co-co? No, but I am a struggling twenty-eight year old writer who loves music and writing about music.
