HBO released the Game Of Thrones Mixtape Vol. 2 On iTunes for free this week and it includes some heavy hittas. The fire and ice thematic mixtape brings their listeners an incredible mix of artists in the hip-hop, R&B, latin, heavy, metal and electronic genre. Each track features music from the Emmy® and Golden Globe® winning series Game of Thrones season 4 soundtrack. There are over 2.5MM streams up to the current date just off of the success of Volume I alone; incredible right? Last year Vol. 1 touched on vibes of reggae and as predicted in early March with Mastodon new song release, Vol. 2 takes it up a whole octave by continuing to add cultural influences and sound.
Volume II artist line-up include sounds from: Snoop Dogg, Stalley, Talib Kweli, Ty Dolla $ign, Yandel, Anthrax, Estelle, Kap G, Killswitch Engage, Mastodon, Melanie Fiona, Method Man, MNDR, Mushroomhead and latin artist Raquel Sofia. This year their putting a spin on diversifying the musical category which will certainly catch the masses. Author George R.R. Martin has written and produced critically-acclaimed series of A Song of Ice and Fire—A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, and A Dance with Dragons. His work has been featured on various films such as Beauty and the Beast and Twilight Zone so you know the music is essentially intriguing. Every artist is getting lyrically expressive about the Game of Thrones with possible future episode story spoilers.
Vol. 2 made sure to bridge the game between hip-hop pioneers such as Snoop Dogg and Talib Kweli, with the new wave of hip-hop artists by adding Maybach Music Group artist Stalley and Taylor Gang member, Ty Dolla $ign. While listening through the tracks you realize it’s truly the epitome of a mixtape with different cultural influences. It’s like one big happy family, huh, take that humanity! One of the top lyrical messiahs, Talib Kweli, spittin’ some consciousness intertwined with vivid analogies throughout the song, Lord of The Light. In his second verse he awakens what could very well be a lyrical synopsis of the series, “This why the arguments of the day is the violence of the night, respect and fear ain’t the same so they get confused”. He also ties in the harsh reality of the characters in the Game of Thrones, “In this game of thrones, when you win you still lose cause your evil get a say when they cheerin’ your name”.
