Did you miss out on seeing Vietcong in New York at the end of January? Well act now, because you may well miss out on seeing them in June. Such as has been the story for this Calgary-based band, who have come so far in such a short time that each week seems to bring more fans, and bigger show announcements. After receiving an 8.5 score from Pitchfork on their self-titled debut, Vietcong can do no wrong, and now they are being invited to play festivals both in Europe and in North America.
Formed from the ashes of Post-rock band “Women,” a band that ended in tragedy, Vietcong has harnessed a kind-of hardcore intensity, but with complicated arrangements, melodies, and a density and complexity not often found in pop music. Coming together in their hometown of Calgary, under the hometown label Flemish Eye (founded by Chad VanGaalen), the band seems to have found that balance of personal expression and appeal that is at the crux of every blossoming career. After the tragic end of “Women,” it is only fitting lead-singer Matt Flegel has learned how to coexist with his new band, and that has allowed this band to grow in ways that, frankly, nobody could have foreseen.
The Northside festival is a festival that takes place in the Northside of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Now in its seventh year, it has grown consistently from a grassroots festival, to one that will have the biggest names in Indie music, art and film. Designed to showcase the “Brooklyn Sound,” the Festival is now an icon of summer in New York.
