Peculiar? Yes, but yet it’s a song full of music brilliance and heat! Laura Marling premiered her new song “Strange” a track from her forthcoming album Short Movie which is set to be released March 23rd through Ribbon Music.
A moving four count starts off Laura and her band into immediate toe-tapping energy and much anticipation for her skillfully-beautiful voice to catch a downbeat. Random notation to mental assumptions, have you ever thought someone who could tell a really good story with a pleasant voice could also sing? Laura is a vocal folklore strategist! Her creative vocal dynamics put a modernized spin to the traditionally presto sound.
It’s clear the song discusses a married man who is in love with another woman who is not as in love with him and she encourages him to “be a good man”. There’s a verse towards the beginning where she says, “You get it all and you realize you haven’t opened up those eyes” which could possibly mean he moved too fast with his life and didn’t get a chance to truly see the world. Towards the ending of the song, “and your love becomes my responsibility”, puts the lyrical synopsis in place with the back and forward temptations between a married man and another woman. Maybe the lady in the story wants good karma to come her way and insists “those who do good will be treated accordingly”.
The lyrics paired with her vocals could be compared to a freestyle dance-off, carelessly-fun and with much syncopation. This song challenges musicians, fans and music-junkies to open up your ears away from the normal way you perceive music.

The elements of her vocal and instrumentation could be summed up as poetic, intriguingly-witty and a full drive of newness. There’s a portion in the song where you can really hear the authentic energy of the hand drums and the tambourine and I mean they are grooving. As the song progresses you start to realize the song is only 3:17 and you reach for the repeat button, because it’s just that good of a song.
Earlier this month, the folklore butterfly also released a song called “I Feel Your Love”, but wait, can you believe she is about to release her fifth album and she is only 25 years old? Laura is making moves, in early February she was added to the SXSW 2015 performers roster, released new video for “False Hope”, and was featured on Gil Landry new song “Take This Body”.
