Over the last decade, Muse has crafted their sound to rock opera heights manifesting a new era of arena rock. They aim to continue this sound in their new album Drones, set to hit shelves June 9 via Warner Bros. Records.

Muse spent a large part of the beginning of their career distancing themselves from the juggernaut of UK alternative rock that Radiohead established in the early 90s. Muse has transcended their song and in recent years shone light on the shadow cast by Radiohead and have established themselves as a leading name in rock and roll world. In between releasing their millennial masterpiece Absolution and recording their follow-up Black Holes and Revelations, a trip to Rome inspired a more dance-oriented sound that utilized synths and electronic music while maintaining their hard rock edge.

In an interview with Radio.com, lead singer Matt Bellamy revealed that with Drones, he hopes to go back to writing more instrument-oriented songs as they have strayed away from using “real” instruments and banked on the electronic sound.

While they may have veered away from real instruments in recent years, the band has never strayed away from the political content and Drones looks to be no different. Bellamy elaborates:

“To me, ‘Drones‘ are metaphorical psychopaths which enable psychopathic behavior with no recourse. The world is run by Drones utilizing Drones to turn us all into Drones. Drones explores the journey of a human, from their abandonment and loss of hope, to their indoctrination by the system to be a human drone, to their eventual defection from their oppressors.”

Never strangers to the concept album, the thematic elements of Drones looks to stay consistent with the dystopian archetypes the band have used over the course of the last decade of their discography. While no official tracks have been released (or leaked for that matter), the first glimpse of the album, track “Psycho” is set to premiere on March 12 via the band’s YouTube channel. The album will be available for preorder beginning 7:30 PM GMT that same day. The first single “Dead Inside,” will debut March 23. In anticipation of the album and following the release of “Psycho” the band will go on a UK tour.
