What would have been Kurt Cobain’s 48th birthday recently passed at the end of February. His daughter Frances Bean Cobain, who is now 22, oversaw the production of the documentary of her father Kurt’s life that was released at this years Sundance Film Festival. Courtney Love, his widower, is currently wrapped up in a lawsuit over a fake Nirvana song posted with the title “Flaccid Bone”.
The allegations concerning the fake “Flaccid Bone” Nirvana video is that a guy with an anonymous YouTube account, somehow got his hands on an unreleased Nirvana song, and along with the video a caption regarding a statement given by Courtney Love was attached to what we now know is a fake song. The caption reads,
“I hacked this off Courtney. I would like to remain anonymous.
She said this came from the early 90’s recording sessions. Supposedly Kurt hated it, and canned it. I mean no disrespect to Kurt, but this is coming out eventually. He hated several of his songs anyway!”
This did not sit well with Ms. Love. She decided to take legal action against the YouTube account owner, and is now in the middle of a lawsuit. The song sounds like a cover bands attempt to recreate the Nirvana sound. This is speculation, but the whole “unreleased” bit of nonsense that accompanies the video in the caption might’ve been a ploy to get more people to listen to a song, or band that otherwise would not have gotten the time of day.
The reason Love might be taking legal action instead of just sweeping “Flaccid Bone” under the rug is, that she owns part of the rights to Nirvana’s music catalog. This part ownership gives her a right to material, and what can or cannot be released. Thankfully the song was discovered to be a fake after all. Again, Ms. Love is accusing user “Nirvana Ananyma” of posting a fake song. Love with the help of a former Nirvana band member identified the song as being a fake.
Love is preparing for the launch of her late husbands documentary titled “Montage Of Heck”. Love says that the project was done extremely well by Director Brett Morgan, and the reviews coming from the Sundance Film Festival make her claim stronger. Francis Bean Cobain has an Executive Producer credit on the film. Courtney added that the film “Montage Of Heck” was “moving”, and “too much”. After three times she feels there is no need to see it again, because of how powerful the movie is, supposedly bringing many people to tears. “Montage Of Heck” is slated for an April release in UK cinemas. Hopefully by then this lawsuit goes away, and no one will try to hack and release unheard Nirvana songs. Nirvana was one of the greatest things to ever happen to music, and given Kurt’s highly brilliant mind it wouldn’t surprise me if there were a lot of unreleased tracks backed up on someone’s hard drive, but the world doesn’t need another reason to miss him. Rest in peace Kurt.
