Disappointed that you missed out on tickets for They Might be Giants later this month at Music Hall of Williamsburg? Fear not! They are playing again in April, in a continuing series that will see them play the last Sunday of every month until the end of May. In a unique and original approach, the band will be playing an entirely new set at each show.
The band gained popularity largely due to a concept called “Dial-a-Song” that they began in the early 90’s. Simply put, they recorded music to an answering machine, advertised the number in a variety of papers, and slowly but surely the curious music fans of New York began to call. The popularity of this completely off-the-wall idea grew, and eventually garnered the band a recording contract, which has led to a twenty-plus career in the world of alt/experimental-rock. It could be said, even, that Dial-A-Song is the originator of the free music movement.
Now, in a more user-friendly though admittedly less original turn, the band has resurrected Dial-a-Song for the internet, and will be uploading a song each week, and playing them each month at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. TMBG do exactly what an experimental band should do: experiment, and they have been refreshing and refining their approach since their days of pre-internet notoriety. For fans new and old, this will be a new and exciting experience, and the show in April will double as a release for the songs they have released over the last several months.
