The Fifty Shades of Grey (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) offers an array of artists to draw out the desirous and tender side of its listeners. The album includes 16 songs, five of which were either remixed or are found only on the soundtrack. The two ending songs are by composer Danny Elfman.
A rendition of “I Put a Spell On You” sets the stage for the ensuing love affair between Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. Annie Lennox, a songstress known by many for her 80s hit song “Sweet Dreams” lends her powerful vocals for this track. Lennox breathes sultriness and soul into the song.
Frank Sinatra, Beyoncé, Vaults and many more artists contributed to this album. Their music all provides a blend that appeals to both romantic and carnal pleasures.
Beyoncé remixed two of her songs “Crazy in Love” and “Haunted” for the film. The “Grey” versions of these tracks have more of a sweet and sour undertone; Beyoncé mixed with her alter ego Sasha Fierce. For “Crazy in Love”, the beat has a higher intensity with a slower tempo infused with violins and Queen Bey’s taunting vocals.
“Meet Me in the Middle” by Jessie Ware is a bluesy heartfelt song about two people compromising and being honest with one another. Ware’s soft voice mixed with the deep melody that the guitar adds make this the perfect song to sway along to with that special someone.
The tune “I’m on Fire” by AWOLNATION describes a desire that, unless you have seen the movie or read the books, you would not understand. The acoustic guitar brings levity to the track with deep lyrics describing the aching need for another.
Both “One Last Night” by Vaults and “Salted Wound” by Sia are soft, uplifting tracks that are guided along by the lightness of the singers’ voices.
No overt sexual undertones in these two songs, instead they inject a beauty and simplicity to the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack that is supposed to be saturated with music to put lovers in the mood.
The majority of the songs that make up this album add heart to the film and allow listeners to have these same tunes be the background music of their own lives. It could easily pass as a playlist for lovers and sweethearts.
