Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller Ex Machina will premiere March 14 at SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, and Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury’s collaborative score will be available on CD and LP April 7.
The composed score will be available via Invada Records and Back Lot Music, and the release of the soundtrack will coincide with the film’s release in the U.S. Ex Machina is Alex Garland’s directorial debut and stars Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, and Alicia Vikander. Garland may be new to directing, but sci-fi thrillers are familiar territory – he wrote 28 Days Later and Sunshine. Following the film’s showing on March 14 at SXSW, there will be a panel about it on March 15.
Geoff Barrow, a founding member of English rock band Portishead, is also a producer and label owner at Invada Records. Ben Salisbury is a soundtrack composer who has worked on more than 200 film and TV scores. Barrow and Salisbury met more than 10 years ago, but didn’t work together until they scored 2012’s Dredd, which was adapted by Garland. They also worked together to release an album called Drokk that was full of tracks inspired by the fictional Mega City from the same comic that created Judge Dredd. That album was also released by Invada Records, and served as a sort of soundtrack to a film that didn’t exist.
Garland spoke to Gigwise about working with Barrow and Salisbury, saying, “They have an incredibly high quality control level. I think they’re kind of amazing. What they do is they keep you honest, they are pretty fierce.”
