It’s difficult to conceive of a higher honor for a musician than being invited to play at the historic Carnegie Hall. Rachmaninoff debuted there, Duke Ellington conducted his orchestra there, and now Bjork has been invited to perform there. If this isn’t a sign that Bjork has surpassed, even confounded, the bounds of pop music, it’s hard to think what is. Her recent album, Vulnicura, has once again exceeded expectations and surprised fans, all the while holding on to that honesty, humility, and genuine expression that has defined her career. Only music that is here to stay gets played at Carnegie Hall, and it is assured that music lovers will be talking about Bjork for years to come.
In truth, none of her material could be better suited to the historic venue than her new album, which is dense with lush, dark string arrangements. Vulnicura was leaked online prematurely, so Bjork was forced into releasing well ahead of the scheduled release date, but not even that could hamper the excitement about Bjork releasing her first new material in four years.
Very few details are available about the show, and tickets are available by phone (if any are left). The good news is that, though nothing could compare to seeing Bjork at Carnegie, she will be playing several more shows around NYC in the coming month including two at Kings Theatre, and three at City Centre. To add to that, there is currently a Bjork retrospective taking place at MoMa. It is a good month for Bjork fans in New York.
