Martin Gore, songwriter and founding member of Depeche Mode, announced that he is releasing solo album on April 28th, 2015, via Mute. The LP, titled “MG”, will feature 16 electronic instrumentals.
Gore began to work in what would become “MG”, after the final dates of Depeche Mode’s Delta Machine tour in March 2013. However, the idea of an entire album of original instrumental music had been lurking in the recesses of Gore’s mind for some time. And, he had had years of experience crafting instrumental tracks as he has been writing instrumentals for Depeche Mode since 1981, according to a press release.
There are various styles of electronic music; so, what can listeners expect from “MG”?
“I wanted to keep the music very electronic, very filmic and give it an almost sci-fi like quality,” Martin explained in the press release. “Music is a necessity for me. I go into the studio at least 5 days a week, every week, so once I had the idea and the template, the process was quick and fun.”
The LP is being released with only MG on the cover, where it serves as both title and artistic moniker for Gore.
In a press release, he explained that there is a tie in with his work with former Depeche Mode member Vince Clark. The two had recorded as VCMG, and released three EPs and one full-length album, SSSS, in 2012. Gore chose to carry on the MG concept from that album into “MG”, because he “felt it deserved another persona,” he said in a press release, due to lack of the vocals and the electronic instrumentation.
So, what does Gore want listeners to take away from this new album?
“As a songwriter, I am aware of the power of words,” Martin admitted in a press release. “Especially when they are juxtaposed in the right way with chords and melody. I am also aware of the power of pure music and the emotions that can be created by musical atmospheres and that is what I wanted to capture with this project.”
