Talib Kweli w/ Immortal Technique @ Highline Ballroom 4/14

Too giants of Hip-Hop will collide at the Highline Ballroom in April, in a show that is sure to be full of energy. Talib Kweli, an icon of New York music will share the stage with Immortal technique, an artist famous in the underground as much for his fierce rhymes and determined social and political stances. In many ways, there are no two artists in Hip-Hop right now that could pair better: neither are prone to shying away from difficult social questions, and, given some of the deep, divisive questions that have been raised recently about what it means to be a minority in America, it seems like the time is right for these artists to perform together in NYC.

Talib Kweli, a native New Yorker, has had a towering career in hip-hop over the last twenty years. From legendary collaborations with DJ Hi-Tek, to iconic Black Star albums with Mos Def,  to his genre-bending work with Idle Warship, Kweli has done it all. With a new album entitled “Prisoner of Conscious,” Kweli is taking a new, bolder artistic direction, and is seeking to expand his artistry on a more global stage.

Immortal Technique has perhaps one of the most fascinating life stories of any rapper alive today. Originally born in Peru, a country which he fled with his family during violent civil war, Immortal Technique has long been a loud, defiant voice in the face of the United States’ autocracy and international hypocrisy. After leaving Peru, he was raised in Harlem, where he grew up to learn that life was not easy in America, either. Briefly imprisoned for assault, Immortal Technique decided to use his frustration to make art and music, and climbed his way to the top of the ladder of NYC emcee’s.
