Björk Guðmundsdóttir, known as Björk in the music industry, has pulled her most recent album off of Spotify. The eccentric, Icelandic, alternative rock icon has already seen struggles with the new album.
Consequence of Sound reported that the singer said “It’s not about the money; it’s about respect” when it came to putting her album Vulnicura on the large scale streaming service Spotify.
Björk’s ninth studio album was set to hit shelves next month, but was leaked two months early putting her label through a “nightmarish” process of handling the release. Placing it to Spotify might only continue the struggles with the release and consumption of the album.
“Guess what? This streaming thing just does not feel right,” Björk said she told her manager. “I don’t know why, but it just seems insane.” She added, “To work on something for two or three years and then just, ‘Oh, here it is for free.’ It’s not about the money; it’s about respect, you know? Respect for the craft and the amount of work you put into it.” Consequence of Sound reported.
Despite her views on Spotify Björk has left her previous albums up on Spotify. Now here repertoire on Spotify resembles much of her work and her music and art referenced in her Museum of Modern Art retrospective, an exhibit that will “chronicle her career through sound, film, visuals, instruments, objects, costumes, and performance.” The exhibit, set to open on March 7th focuses on her art and projects.
