Jazz guitarist Russell Malone will play two sets tonight at Jazz Standard, and if you are a jazz fan, or any music fan for that matter, you will want to see this show. Malone is a guitarist who has played with some of the biggest names in jazz and pop over the last 25 years, but has recently seen success playing in his own quartet. In 1988 he began playing in the band of organ legend Jimmy Smith, before joining Harry Connick Jr., and then Diana Krall.
Russell Malone is a self-taught guitarist born directly from the lineage of classic jazz guitar players, and he is much at home on a solo guitar ballad as he is on uptempo blues and bebop. Devoted equally to Wes Montgomery as he is to Joe Pass or George Benson, his live performances are dynamic, exciting and full of the virtuosity you’d expect from one of the best jazz guitarists of this generation.
In his band he will have Rick Germanson on piano, Gerald Cannon on Bass, and Willie Jones on drums. There will be a set at 7:30 and a set at 10:00, so head to Jazz Standard for some BBQ and hear some great music after work, or go down later on for the second set.
